| Urinary incontinence is a frustrating problem for many dog owners. It can occur at any age and in either sex, although it is most common in the elderly bitch. Your clients love their animals and they count on you to solve this annoying problem. Phenylpropanolamine has been shown to be an effective aid in the control of urinary incontinence. A study published in Dansk Veterinaertidsskrift1, a Danish journal, indicated that phenylpropanolamine effectively controlled urinary incontinence in all 17 of the dogs receiving oral dosage, although one dog continued to have slight symptoms. Oral treatment at 1.5 mg/kg body weight twice daily was administered to 15 of the dogs and 1.5 mg/kg once or 3 times daily in the other 2 dogs. Thirteen of the dogs were female. Four males were included in the study which encompassed nine different breeds. Slight incontinence occurred in only one of the study subjects.
