High Potency Calcium Gel contains 470 mg/ml (350 mg/gm) calcium chloride specifically formulated in a quickly absorbed gel base for the prevention and treatment of parturient hypocalcemia.

High Potency Calcium Gel has been proven to increase serum calcium levels within five minutes of administration (figures below).

Hypocalcemia affects up to ten percent of all dairy cows and may decrease lactation by as much as 14%. High Potency Calcium Gel provides a steady recovery from parturient hypocalcemia, eliminating shaking and trembling and greatly reducing the occurrence of downer cow syndrome. Increased calcium levels have been shown to remain elevated for at least 6 hours after administration. High Potency Calcium Gel has also been shown to maintain serum inorganic phosphorus concentrations.

Oral administration of High Potency Calcium Gel is a “valuable, easily administered supportive treatment when a supplemental source of calcium is indicated”. PRN High Potency Calcium Gel is recommended as a preventative treatment for stressed and older cows that have previously shown symptoms of parturient hypocalcemia. High Potency Calcium Gel should be administered within 24 hours of parturition. Repeat dosage within 24 hours.

Research at Ohio State University has shown that High Potency Calcium Gel administered orally caused a rapid increase in serum calcium concentration. All gel in the OSU study was administered by nonprofessional personnel; no oral lacerations or adverse reactions were observed.

Figure 1: Post-treatment mean values (±1 SD) of serum total calcium concentration in cows treated orally with calcium gel (treatment) or with the inert carrier gel (control) at 0 minutes. The increase in serum calcium concentration in the treatment group was significant (P <0.05), compared with that of the control group, from 5 through 360 minutes after treatment. Figure 2: Post-treatment mean values (±1 SD) of serum inorganic phosphorus concentration in control vs. treatment groups. Serum inorganic phosphorus concentration were significantly (P <0.05) increased for treated vs control cows after oral administration of gels at 0 minutes. See Figure 1 for key.
